Chapter Two

Braxton Price

Broken Hill, South Dakota, 1870.

Broken Hill was a gold mining settlement in its original heyday. Now it was just barely managing to stay afloat, threatening to turn into a ghost town as the original pointers and settlers abandoned it for greener pastures.

But Braxton Price wasn't the sort of man who abandoned things so easily. He had high hopes for Broken Hill and believe that it could evolve from the skeleton of a gold mining camp to a real town, with a real government, where commerce could flourish. He believed it could be a place for families, a place where children could grow up. Not that he had any interest in having any of his own of course: Braxton Price had other more important things on his mind.

He intended to become Sheriff of Broken Hill. The first one they'd ever had.

They had lived without official laws -- or a sheriff to enforce them -- for long enough. But times were changing. Law and order were coming to Broken Hill, and the few people left were demanding it. And Braxton wanted to be the first Sheriff to run the town.

He'd be good at it too: he was well respected by the town's folk and even liked by them most of the time when he wasn't rubbing them up the wrong way with his prickly demeanor. Braxton had proven himself to be a canny businessman, with his blacksmith shop surviving the end of the gold rush when many others had failed. And he was tall and handsome. Maybe not prerequisites for a sheriff, but they sure didn't hurt. There weren't many women in the town but what few there were liked him -- he had a rough charm that won them over. The men were slightly harder to crack. But Braxton knew he would have to if he was going to win the upcoming election.

The only problem was Braxton's reputation. Men didn't like that Braxton was a bachelor. It made some of the women nervous as well. But as far as Braxton could see, there wasn't much he could do about that.

He trudged down the hill after a long day's campaigning back to the small stone cottage that he shared with his older sister Cassie. She was outside tending to the washing, and she shot Braxton a strange look as she approached. "What's got you in such a sour mood today then?"

Braxton shrugged and leaned against the stone wall of the cottage. "Looks like the tide is turning in favor of old Bill," he said. "The people in this town like the old food better than they like me."

Cassie wrung out the washing and cast Braxton a wry look. "Why don't you try bein' nice for a change?"

"I'm nice," Braxton shot back. Though he was sulking now over his sister's words. "I just more straight talking than he is. He knows how to sweet talk them. I got other talents."

She smiled at him and pinched her little brother's cheeks. "I know," she said.
